As a young girl, I discovered I had a tiny hole in one of my ears – my right ear precisely. This hole wasn’t a piercing; I was born with it. It is also not in my ear lobule (like is typical of most ear piercings) but close to the root of helix. I always wondered how it got there and why it was there in the first place. I asked my parents about it several times, and they simply told me, “God placed it there.”

A couple of years later, I learned that the hole in my right ear is called a “preauricular sinus.” Apparently, it is a rare congenital condition that occurs in a minority of people. Less than 1% of the world’s population has this condition, which is believed to be harmless. Interestingly, only a few people have noticed this hole in my ear. I often forget it’s there because it doesn’t affect my auditory perception or cause me any discomfort.
Scientists are uncertain about the cause of the preauricular sinus. A school of thought believes that it is due to a defect that arises when the ear canal is not properly formed at the early stages of gestation. Another school of thought opines that it might be the evolutionary remnants of fish gills. But, as a scientist who believes in God, I know it is just a lovely reminder of how special I am. I also know God made no mistakes while He formed me. Instead, as my parents had said, God specifically put that hole there for a purpose. In fact, He went all out to put in every other minute detail that makes me who I am.
It gives me an appreciation of how articulately God has created me.
Like me, we all have similar physical features that serve as beautiful reminders of our uniqueness. Sometimes, we take these reminders for granted or even wish they did not exist. Have you ever taken a moment to appreciate God for the meticulously designed work of art you are? We often get so carried away wishing for the “perfect” body that we fail to realize that we are perfection.
This world is filled with so many people. Current global population estimates there are about 8 billion people in the world today. Of this multitude of people, isn’t it thrilling to know that you are not a “mass production”? Instead, you are bespoke: fearfully and wonderfully made! One-of-a-kind!!
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:14 KJV)
My prayer for you today is that you have a fresh appreciation of how priceless you are in the sight of God and how intentional God was when He meticulously handcrafted you.
