“Zacchaeus, Come Down!” — A Sweet Reminder That Our Kids Are Listening

A few weeks ago, I taught my kids the Bible story of Zacchaeus—the man who climbed a tree just to catch a glimpse of Jesus. We talked about how Jesus saw him, called him by name, and chose to visit his home. I didn’t think much of it at the time. It was one of many lessons we go through as part of our weekly Bible routine.

But a few days later, something sweet and unexpected happened.

My daughter, who is two, and my son, who is five, were playing with a spinning office chair. They took turns sitting and twirling around, squealing with laughter. Then came my daughter’s turn again. She sat, spun around gleefully, and refused to get off.

Her brother said, “Mosearl, come down.”

She quickly replied, “No! I’m Zacchaeus.”

And without missing a beat, he laughed and said, “Zacchaeus, come down! But this is not a tree—it’s a chair, Mosearl!”

They both giggled, and just kept playing. But me? I stood there soaking in the moment, stunned at how deeply they had internalized the story. Not just remembered it—but understood it. They had taken a biblical narrative and made it a part of their world.

No one had to prompt them. No one had to say, “Now what would Zacchaeus do?” It was almost like an inside joke—something shared between them that didn’t need explanation.

And for me as a parent, it was a full-circle moment.

This is what we hope for, isn’t it? That the time we spend planting God’s Word into their hearts isn’t wasted. That somehow, even in the chaos and the short attention spans, something sticks.

To the parent reading this, I want to say: Don’t stop sowing.

It might seem like your little ones doesn’t get it. Or that the stories are too abstract—after all, what does climbing a tree to see Jesus have to do with revolving chairs and 21st-century playrooms?

But trust me—God’s Word finds its way in.

And when it does, you may just find ‘Zacchaeus’ spinning around in your living room 😅😅

Keep teaching. Keep sharing. Keep sowing. The harvest will come.
